My PC shouldn't struggle with this game so I'm wondering what is going on. So basically, it does not take a genius to come to that conclusion. If the game does not crash the sound is gone or the game crashes and the sound is not gone. It is funny how the crashing, blackscreen and audio were so related and linked with each other. It was simply playing fine one second and the next I am looking at the steam client. It’s 95 likely that the crashes and freezes would be long gone after this section. There was no halt in gameplay - no blank screen or any pausing that would make me expect a crash. No errors, it was as if it was never running. Twice today it crashed mid-game, straight to desktop. I have Age Of Empires 2, Definitive Edition, installed on my PC (spec in sig) through the Steam Client.
